The Texas Stallion Stakes Series (TSSS) is a set of races sponsored by the Texas Thoroughbred Association (TTA) for progeny of nominated Texas-based stallions.
The TSSS features four sets of races, each split into two divisions (colts/geldings and fillies) for a purse of $100,000 per division. Each division has been named after a great Texas horse of the past.
The TSSS schedule kicks off each summer with the Staunch Avenger and Pan Zareta divisions for 2-year-olds going 5 1/2 furlongs at Lone Star Park. The series moves on to Retama Park in the fall with the My Dandy and Darby's Daughter divisions at six furlongs. In January or February, 3-year-olds compete in the Jim's Oribt and Two Altazano divisions at one mile at Sam Houston Race Park. The series concludes during the spring meet at Lone Star Park with the Stymie and Got Koko divisions at 1 1/16 miles.
Only progeny of nominated Texas stallions are eligible to be nominated to the TSSS, but the foals may be foaled outside of Texas.
Stallions can be nominated to the TSSS with a payment of their advertised stud fee or $1,500, whichever amount is greater.
Eligible foals must be nominated to the TSSS to participate. Owners can nominate for $100 by December 31 of the weanling year, or $500 by December 31 of the yearling year. After that, there is no other opportunity to nominate. Once nominated, the foal is eligible to all four stakes in the TSSS for a $500 entry and $1,000 start fee per race. There are no late nominations, supplemental entries or sustaining payments. Nomination forms are available online.
