Annual Texas-bred champions are determined using the Texas Champions Point System, a process that assigns numeric value to achievements in stakes races.

The system allots graduated points for stakes wins in graded, open and restricted company, with the number of points being dependent upon the size of the purse. The point scale is weighted to reward accomplishment in open company, but is also structured to provide horses who race strictly in accredited Texas-bred stakes company with an equal opportunity to compete for year-end honors. Points will be based on the available value of the race, ex. if the purse for a stakes is $100,000 but only $97,000 is distributed because of only four runners, points will be calculated based on the $100,000 available purse.

The horse with the most points in each age/gender division on December 31 is deemed champion of that division. The runner with the most points overall is named Texas Horse of the Year.

In the case of a year-end tie in points in any division, money earnings for the year are taken into consideration. The leading money earner during the year will be named the divisional champion.

The Texas Broodmare of the Year award will go to the dam of the Texas Horse of the Year.
